The Network
Summary
Furious Gamer Radio is a video game radio network that began development in August 2007 and officially launched on February 4, 2009. The Furious Gamer Radio iPhone application launched on March 6,2009.
Furious Gamer Radio is being built to be the comprehensive video game talk radio network that the gaming community deserves. It is our belief that while the gaming industry keeps pace or surpasses the music, television, and film industries financially, the media that surrounds our industry does not follow suit. So we intend to bring new forms of programming forward, such as NPR style shows, panel discussion and historical programming as a few examples, coupled with community generated content to create a true video games talk-radio network. Furious Gamer Radio is built on a foundation of community generated content and at launch is made up of 11 community generated shows, with additional shows and original programming to follow.
In short, we aim to be the most comprehensive outlet for audio media related to gaming by bringing the gaming industry the varied types of programming it deserves while honoring the community roots from which it comes.
Details
Furious Gamer Radio has been created with one goal in mind:
To create a comprehensive 24 hour-a-day talk radio network, dedicated to video games, which will provide new content daily.
What you see here represents the first step toward that goal. We intend to create this network by implementing two basic ideas:
1) To bring together into one cohesive location the incredible programs that the members of the video game community have already created and
2) To bring new types of content related to video games that are not currently available to the gaming community.
The community that surrounds video games is one of the most active and interactive communities surrounding any form of media, art, hobby, or pastime; or any other subject for that matter. The gaming community jumped on the podcast revolution early and has been at the forefront of creating peer generated media for quite some time. Many of these podcasts are thoughtful, intelligent, insightful, and just plain fun to listen to. It was our love for gaming and for these podcasts that spawned the idea for Furious Gamer Radio. We wanted to be able to go to a radio network and listen to this great gaming content the way other people might flip on sports radio or political talk. And so Furious Gamer Radio was born. While we have worked hard to create an outstanding line-up of talented podcasters for you at launch, these are not the only good podcasts in the community and we not only hope to add members to the Furious Gamer Radio Network in the future, but we respect and enjoy those who may not be on our network as well.
In addition to the great content that is already out there, we also feel there is a lot of room for even more types of programming that the gaming community doesn't yet enjoy. Over 191,000,000 Americans play video games on a regular basis. Yet the gaming industry doesn't have some of the creative programming surrounding it the way the television, movie, or music industries do. We're talking about shows related to gaming history and social context, NPR style shows or panel discussions, in-depth interviews or perhaps a show about video gaming's place in driving global technology. There are many different types of programming that the gaming community would like to hear that relate to our chosen pastime. These are just examples. We think an industry that has surpassed the music industry financially and is creeping up on the film and television industries can support many different forms of media for its community to enjoy, and we intend to bring them to you. We hope to do this by producing some of the content ourselves, such as Uncanny Valley, as well as by helping community members to create high-quality shows of their own.
While not everything we hope to include on the network is available right now, as we grow we will strive to bring you more and more varied content to satisfy whatever type of show your appetite desires. Thoughts, suggestions, and ideas are encouraged and always welcome via email or in our forums. We want your input, as we are designing this radio network for all of us to enjoy. Furious Gamer Radio is always, at its core……By the Community, For the Community.
The People
Lorin Baumgarten
Lorin has been playing video games since he was a kid riding his BMX bike to the local arcade every Friday afternoon to play Karate Champ and Tron. Since then he has had many interesting adventures. Throughout them all, there has always been one constant....the games. Lorin worked in Los Angeles for 3 years doing film production; he owned his own company as a Macintosh Technician (although he now has a PC for gaming purposes); he worked at Denver Botanic Gardens where he produced their Summer Concert Series; and he also produced a pilot for a local cooking show in Denver. Lorin has been an EMT for 6 years and was a volunteer firefighter for four. Lorin is also a certified white water rafting guide and recently married an incredible woman who has given him an amazing amount of support throughout the development of Furious Gamer Radio. Lorin is a big fan of the FPS and the Horror/Suspenses genres and has a growing love for 3rd person action adventure and RPG's. He splits his gaming time between the Xbox 360 and the PC, with a little bit of PSP and iPhone thrown in for good measure.
Aaron Hines
Aaron Hines is an avid gamer with a particular fondness for PC gaming. He resides in the Denver area and is married to an extremely patient woman. They have a very busy 8 month old boy who keeps them hopping most of the time. Aaron spent the past 8 years working as a man-nurse in the ICU. In the past year, however, he made the transition to the field of Clinical Informatics and is now saving lives one right-click at a time. Aaron has been making sweet love to video games since the days of the Atari 2600. He thoroughly enjoys shooters and playing online with his buddies. Aaron is passionate about providing a service to the gaming community that is long overdue!
Kerry Davis
Kerry is a long-time gamer who enjoys running and gunning on first-person shooters. He was born and raised in Mississippi where he grew to love the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, shooting and four-wheeling were an integral part of his young life. He joined the USAF and spent 10 years on active duty and 5.5 years in the reserves, where he was a combat flight medic. After the military he carried his medical expertise over into a civilian paramedic job while going to nursing school. After nursing school, he and his lovely wife, Lynn, moved, with their kids, back to her hometown of Boulder, Colorado. He has an extensive background in both emergency and critical care nursing. He currently works at a local hospital in the Clinical Informatics department as a support and education specialist. In his off-time, he enjoys PC gaming, music, competitive and defensive shooting and spending time with his family here and in his native Mississippi. He is an avid student of tactical medicine and both 19th Century American and modern military history. He appreciates fine single-barrel bourbon and rye whiskey, an occasional cigar and custom firearms.
